Alfredo Damas, a 45-year-old Alhambra resident, was found dead after swimming in a river attempting to save his teenage daughter from drowning on Friday, June 22.
According to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were dispatched to the Merced River after receiving an emergency call regarding a 14-year-old girl floating in the river.
Upon rescuing his daughter, Damas was submerged six feet under water and drowned. A Bureau of Land Management ranger found Damas’ body and attempted unsuccessfully to perform CPR on him.
His daughter survived and was escorted to safety by witnesses around the area, according to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office. An autopsy is pending, and the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the death investigation.
